I addition to Ashes list, which is I think how most people I know operate, or at least to varying degrees.
I'd add these three things:
1. Don't say anything behind somebodies back you aren't prepared to say to their face.
Okay this is quite as simple as calling somebody a crack smoking whore to their face, obviously you temper things you
say to the audience. But if you aren't prepared to really tell people what you think to their face, or for them to hear what you said from some other source, then you should be thinking about if you really should be telling anybody.
2. Don't commit to anything you don't honestly think you'll do. For me this is especially related to turning up to things.
For example: If I'm invited to a party but I don't want to go, or know that most likely I won't have time to go, I don't say I'll be there.
""Yeah yeah I'll see you there"" when you have no intention of turning up is lame.
""A No uttered in sincerity is better than a Yes said only to please"" (??)
(Of course being late to that event is a different thing!)
3. The last one is something I remember talking to Crispy about when we flatted together.
Basically he said that if you do something in public,
infront of people you know than be prepared for them to gossip about it, and don't deny it.
Its public knowledge and you shouldn't be pissed about people talking about it
